No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A 37-year-old man, Kabil Sheikh, was found dead near his residence in Pathar Madhaiyapur village under the Sahapur area of Old Malda block in Malda on Sunday. His body was discovered hanging from an electric pole in a nearby field, prompting a police investigation and raising concerns within the local community.
According to family members, the incident was not linked to any domestic dispute but was allegedly connected to the removal of his name from the voter list under the ongoing revision process. They claimed that the development had caused him significant mental distress in recent days.
Police officials, after conducting a preliminary inquiry, suspect the case to be a suicide. Sources in the local administration indicated that Kabil Sheikh’s name had been removed from the final voter list. Authorities have registered a case of unnatural death and are continuing further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Kabil Sheikh, a farmer by profession, is survived by his wife Bulbuli Khatun, a seven-year-old son, and a four-year-old daughter. His elder brother, Merajul Haque, stated that Kabil had been under stress after his name was marked as “under consideration,” and later removed along with three other brothers. The family has blamed the Election Commission of India, alleging that the exclusion raised doubts about their citizenship and led to severe mental pressure. However, no formal complaint has been filed so far.
