Kanpur Nagar Additional Sessions Judge Surendra Pal Singh on Tuesday sentenced the accused to seven years rigorous imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 for the murder of his wife.
In its order, the court said that if the accused Sanjay Bajpai does not pay the fine, he will face another five months in jail. The time he spent in jail during the trial will be adjusted in the sentence.
According to ADGC Pradeep Kumar Sahu, Amit Kumar Shukla, brother of deceased Sarita, in his FIR claimed that his sister was married to Sanjay Bajpai of Barra area in 2001. As the couple had no problem even after eight years of marriage, Sarita's husband Sanjay and his family members tortured and beat her.
In December 2008, Sarita went to her parents' house to attend her brother's wedding. After the marriage ended, when Sanjay did not come to take his wife from her house, her brother Sushil Shukla dropped her at her in-laws' house. Her in-laws continued to torture her and on 19 July 2019, Sanjay and his family members beat up Sarita, administered some poisonous substance to her and threw her in LLR hospital in a precarious condition and fled.
The complainant said that after receiving the information, he reached the LLR hospital and found his sister lying dead. The court acquitted Ram Manohar Bajpai (father-in-law) Baua Bajpai alias Vinay Bajpai and Ajay Bajpai (both brothers-in-law) and Soni (sister-in-law) of charges under Sections 498 A and 306 IPC for searching evidence.
