A man has been arrested in East Medinipur for allegedly attempting to rape and murder his sister-in-law. The incident took place in Mirzapur village under Manjushree Gram Panchayat in Egra 2 block. According to local accounts, 55-year-old Nimai Das targeted his younger brother’s wife when he found her alone at home.
The accused allegedly tried to rape the woman by pressing her face. When she screamed for help, he reportedly attempted to strangle her, fearing that family members and neighbours would discover the crime. As the woman’s condition worsened, the accused fled from the spot.
The victim’s family rescued her and rushed her to Egra Super Specialty Hospital. They later lodged a complaint at Egra police station. Acting on the complaint, a team led by SI Shahida Khatun arrested the accused from the Lalat area of West Medinipur on Tuesday night.
The arrested man was produced before the sub-district court on Wednesday. Egra police have initiated a full investigation into the incident to determine all circumstances surrounding the crime.
