A man in Uttar Pradesh has been sentenced to life in prison for cutting open his pregnant wife's stomach to determine the gender of their unborn child. Panna Lal, a resident of Badaun's Civil Lines, was convicted for the September 2020 attack on his wife Anita, who survived but lost their baby boy. The couple, married for 22 years with five daughters, frequently argued as Lal desperately wanted a son. Despite Anita's family's attempts to dissuade him, Lal threatened to divorce her and remarry to achieve his goal.
During a heated argument, Panna Lal attacked Anita, who was eight months pregnant, with a sickle. He cut her stomach open to check the baby's gender, leaving her intestines exposed. Anita managed to escape and was rescued by her brother, who rushed her to the hospital for emergency treatment. In court, Anita recounted the horrific attack, while Lal claimed she had inflicted the wounds herself due to a property dispute with her brothers. The court, however, found him guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
