Man killed inside home, 6 injured as elephant strays into Bankura villages

A villager was killed and six others were injured after an elephant entered multiple villages in the Jaipur Range area of Bankura district on Wednesday morning. The deceased has been identified as Vijay Kole, a resident of Patharpada village in the Rautkhand area. The incident triggered panic across Rautkhand, Jamdigari and Kalabani villages.

According to available information, the elephant strayed into the locality at dawn and began damaging several houses. Amid the chaos, Vijay Kole reportedly came face-to-face with the animal inside his home and was killed on the spot. Residents said the sound of the elephant’s trumpeting woke them from sleep, forcing many to flee in different directions to save themselves.

Police and Forest Department teams rushed to the area after receiving information and carried out rescue operations. The injured, including one Forest Department employee, were taken to the Jaipur Block Primary Health Centre, where they are undergoing treatment.

Jaipur Range Officer Rajesh Das said efforts were underway to control the stray elephant, but it had not been brought under control at the time of reporting. The administration has advised residents in the affected villages to remain alert as monitoring operations continue.
