A shocking incident unfolded in Kalishanda village, Khirkundi Namaz Gram Panchayat, Hooghly district, on Wednesday evening when a man attempted self-immolation after a business dispute. The event was broadcast live on Facebook, capturing the moments leading up to the act.
The man, identified as Alok Hazra, reportedly doused himself in petrol and set himself on fire near the house of his business associate, Asif Hussain Molla. Alok's wife, Mausami, sustained burns while trying to save her husband. Both were rushed to Pandaua Rural Hospital and later referred to Chunchura Imambara Hospital for advanced treatment.
According to local sources, Alok and Asif had been engaged in a network herbal product business. Their relationship soured after financial disputes arose, with Alok accusing Asif of failing to repay a significant amount of money. Allegedly, Asif retaliated by making derogatory comments about Alok on Facebook Live, calling him a "thief" and a "deceiver," which reportedly damaged Alok's social reputation.
On Wednesday evening, Alok, accompanied by his wife and others, confronted Asif near his house. During the confrontation, Alok began a Facebook Live stream and declared his intention to end his life due to the humiliation he faced. Shortly after, he set himself on fire. Mausami, in a desperate attempt to save him, was also injured. Asif fled the scene during the chaos.
The Additional Superintendent of Police, Hooghly Rural, Kalyan Sarkar, stated, "Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident stemmed from a business dispute. The matter is being thoroughly investigated to ascertain further details." The incident has sparked shock and concern among locals, with many highlighting the devastating consequences of financial and social disputes. Authorities have assured a thorough probe into the matter.
