West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant has condemned the recent violence in Jangipur, Murshidabad, terming the incident “deplorable.” He stated that the state government stands with those who have lost their jobs and assured that legal options are being considered regarding the matter. “We are also legally reviewing the recent decision,” he said, referring to the protests that erupted over the Waqf Act and related developments.
Pant appealed to the public to maintain peace and order in the region. “There is a need to maintain a peace chain. Have patience—schools can be rejoined from tomorrow if desired, though no official order is being issued,” he said. His remarks came amid heightened tension and sporadic violence reported from Jangipur during demonstrations over the Waqf Act.
In response to the unrest, the District Magistrate of Murshidabad imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the Suti and Raghunathganj police station areas. The orders restrict the assembly of five or more persons, possession of arms, inflammable items, and public rallies or provocative speeches, and will remain in effect till 6 p.m. on Thursday.
