Indian shooting sensation Manu Bhaker has been crowned the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year after her incredible performance at the Paris Olympics 2024, where she secured two historic bronze medals. The 22-year-old shooter became the first Indian female shooter to win multiple Olympic medals in a single edition, etching her name in history.

Bhaker’s triumph in 10m air pistol mixed team and women’s 10m air pistol ended India's 12-year medal drought in Olympic shooting. Her ability to deliver under pressure and her consistent performances throughout the tournament made her a standout athlete on the global stage.

She edged past strong contenders for the BBC Sportswoman of the Year award, including golfer Aditi Ashok, para-shooter Avani Lekhara, cricketer Smriti Mandhana, and wrestler Vinesh Phogat. These athletes have played a significant role in elevating India’s presence in international sports, but Bhaker’s groundbreaking Olympic feat secured her the top honor.

Her achievements did not go unnoticed in India, as she was also conferred with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in January 2024, India’s highest sporting honor. Interestingly, Bhaker’s name was initially missing from the list of nominees, but after her stellar Olympic performance, the Sports Ministry ensured she received the recognition she deserved.

At just 22, Manu Bhaker has already established herself as a trailblazer in Indian shooting. Her journey from a young prodigy to an Olympic medalist and a national icon is an inspiration for aspiring athletes across the country. With her relentless dedication and skill, she is expected to bring home even more laurels in future tournaments.

The Paris Olympics 2024 will always be remembered as the stage where Manu Bhaker shattered records, broke barriers, and made India proud. With her eyes now set on the next Olympic cycle, the nation will be eagerly watching her next move.
