An alleged rape of a married woman near the Teesta River in Jalpaiguri has triggered tension in the area, with the accused currently absconding. A written complaint was lodged at Kotwali Police Station on Thursday, following which police initiated an investigation and began search operations.
According to local sources, the woman, a resident of Pradhanpara village under Nandanpur Gram Panchayat in Jalpaiguri Sadar block, had gone on Wednesday evening to a riverine char area of the Teesta to bring back her cow. It is alleged that a young man from the neighbourhood took advantage of the isolated location and sexually assaulted her.
As news of the incident spread, unrest was reported in the locality. Police brought the accused youth’s mother to the station for questioning on Wednesday night, but the main accused remains at large. Officials said raids are being conducted to trace and arrest him, and further investigation is underway.
