A fire broke out at an illegally operated tire resoling factory in Soharai, Raiganj, on Friday morning, causing panic among residents. Thick black smoke was seen billowing from the factory, following which locals alerted the fire brigade. Two fire engines reached the scene and took significant effort to douse the flames. No casualties have been reported, but nearby areas were affected by the smoke.
According to local residents, the factory had been running illegally for years despite repeated complaints. “We have informed the authorities multiple times, but no strict action was taken,” said a resident. Many believe that hazardous materials stored inside the unit contributed to the fire. However, officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the incident.
Authorities are assessing the damage, and officials are expected to inspect whether fire safety norms were violated. Locals are demanding an immediate probe and strict action against unauthorized industrial units operating in residential areas.
