Amid midnight, a ferocious fire erupts at a cotton godown in Dogachia Ghosh Para under Gaighata Police Station in North 24 Parganas district. The blaze, which broke out rapidly engulfed the godown owned by local businessman Brajamohan Chatterjee. Eyewitnesses described the scene as flames leaping high and thick black smoke erupts from the godown. Firefighters from the local station rushed three fire engines to the site, battling the inferno for hours in a desperate bid to contain the spread, but the godown—stocked with tons of highly flammable cotton materials—was already beyond saving by the time they arrived.
Godown owner Brajamohan's wife, Madhumita Chatterjee, who was asleep inside the adjacent residence, was rescued by neighbors. Preliminary investigations point to a possible electrical short circuit as the spark, though authorities are probing deeper into potential negligence. The fire's intensity was fueled by the dense stacks of raw cotton, which acted like tinder, accelerating the blaze despite the firefighters' valiant efforts.
No casualties were reported but the financial loss toll is expected high. Recovery efforts are underway. The incident has reignited calls for stricter fire safety norms in rural industrial setups, where godowns often double as family homes, highlighting the thin line between prosperity and peril. Locals have coordinated swift aid while the fire service conducts a thorough audit to prevent future disasters.
