A massive fire broke out at Annapurna Nursing Home in the Nawabhata area along National Highway 19 in Purba Bardhaman on Monday, triggering panic among patients, doctors, and their families. The blaze spread rapidly within moments, forcing authorities to initiate an emergency evacuation as thick smoke engulfed parts of the facility.
Upon receiving information, at least four fire engines rushed to the spot and began firefighting operations. During the rescue efforts, one firefighter reportedly fell seriously ill and had to be immediately taken for treatment. Hospital authorities faced considerable challenges in shifting patients, especially those in critical care, to nearby medical facilities. The sudden outbreak of fire created chaos and anxiety among relatives present at the site. A family member of a patient said smoke was first noticed inside the ICU, after which people were asked to evacuate immediately, adding that all patients were eventually moved to safety.
