MBA student who sold kidney for fees breaks down in hospital; girlfriend says ‘you should have told me’

An MBA student who allegedly sold his kidney to pay tuition fees broke down emotionally during a brief meeting with his girlfriend at a hospital in Kanpur, highlighting the human cost of a suspected organ trafficking racket. The student, identified as Ayush from Graphic Era University, met his girlfriend for about 10 minutes under police supervision, during which he admitted his mistake and pleaded with authorities not to inform his mother about the incident.

According to police, Ayush had fallen victim to a kidney trafficking network and underwent surgery after being promised financial compensation that was never fully delivered. Following the operation, his health has remained fragile, and he is currently under medical supervision. The emotional meeting took place in a secured hospital ward, with multiple police personnel deployed due to the ongoing investigation.

During the interaction, Ayush reportedly broke down on seeing his girlfriend and apologised, saying he had made a serious mistake. His girlfriend consoled him and questioned why he had taken such a drastic step without informing her, stating that she could have arranged money for his fees. Overwhelmed, he repeatedly urged authorities not to disclose the truth to his family, claiming he had earlier told them he was in Kanpur for a job.

Doctors later curtailed the meeting due to concerns over infection risks, and the student remained under close medical care. Despite his request, police have informed his family about the situation. The incident has drawn attention to the emotional and financial pressures faced by students, as well as the risks posed by illegal organ trade networks.

So far, six individuals, including a doctor couple, have been arrested in connection with the kidney trafficking case. Police are continuing their investigation, with multiple teams searching for additional accused believed to be operating across several cities. Lookout notices have also been issued to prevent suspects from leaving the country.
