Court sends Councilor Mahesh Sharma to 6-day police custody in extortion case
Heavy tension gripped the Vivekanandapally area under Kharia Panchayat near Jalpaiguri town after a mentally unstable woman was allegedly raped inside a local BJP party office late at night. The incident sparked widespread outrage in the locality, and the Jalpaiguri Kotwali Police Station arrested the accused. He is scheduled to be produced in court on Wednesday.
According to the complaint, the accused allegedly took the woman from the roadside to the BJP office around midnight and raped her there. As word of the incident spread, local residents rushed to the spot after hearing her cries and detained the accused while he was allegedly attempting to flee. Police arrived soon after being informed and took him into custody. A formal complaint was lodged on Tuesday afternoon, following which the arrest was made.
Residents expressed strong anger and demanded the strictest punishment. A complainant alleged that the woman was forcibly taken and assaulted and warned that such acts could recur if strict action is not taken. The survivor is reportedly unable to clearly narrate the full sequence of events but mentioned that her home is in Siliguri.
The alleged BJP angle has intensified the political row. Local leaders from the Trinamool Congress accused a BJP worker of committing the crime inside the party office. However, BJP district leaders denied the claim, stating that the party office remains closed at midnight and asserting that the accused is not associated with the party. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
