Meta has confirmed that it will discontinue end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for Instagram messaging starting May 8, 2026, a move that could allow the company potential access to user conversations. The notification has begun appearing inside the app under the Messaging section within Instagram Features, informing users about the upcoming change and advising them to prepare for the transition.
According to the notice, users whose chats are affected will receive instructions on how to download their existing messages, photos, videos, and other media before the protection is removed. “If you have chats that are impacted by this change, you will see instructions on how you can download any media or messages you may want to keep,” the company said in the message shown inside the app.
End-to-end encryption is designed to ensure that only the sender and receiver can read the content of a conversation, preventing even the service provider from accessing the messages. In encrypted chats, each device uses a unique security key to lock and unlock conversations, ensuring that messages, calls, videos, and media remain private between the two communicating users.
Meta has not provided a clear explanation for why it is removing the encryption protection from Instagram messaging. It also remains uncertain whether similar changes will be introduced on other Meta platforms such as Facebook Messenger. For now, users can continue using end-to-end encrypted chats on Instagram until the change takes effect on May 8, 2026.
