The Kolkata Metro Rail authority has unveiled ambitious plans to enhance the city's metro connectivity, with the aim of providing more efficient and convenient transportation options for the citizens. On a recent Tuesday afternoon, P Udaya Kumar Reddy, the General Manager of Kolkata Metro Rail, revealed the proposed timelines for expanding the metro services.
According to the announcement, the eagerly anticipated metro service from Kavi Subhash to Beleghata is set to commence in December of this year. This step will mark a significant advancement in the city's public transportation infrastructure. Following this, the authority is geared to extend the metro movement up to Sector-5 by June 2024.
Furthermore, the next phase of development envisions metro services commencing from Kavi Subhash to City Center 1 by December of the following year, signifying the authority's commitment to gradual yet substantial expansion.
One of the most eagerly awaited developments is the connection to Kolkata Airport. The General Manager shared that they are in the process of planning metro services from Kavi Subhash to the airport, aiming for a launch in December 2025. However, if certain contingencies arise, the initiation could be pushed to June 2026. Regardless, the Kolkata Metro Rail intends to establish a metro route connecting Kavi Subhash to the airport via Noapara by December 2024, a critical step in improving accessibility and convenience for travelers.
In addition to the extension of metro lines, a notable feature of this expansion plan is the adaptation of the Kolkata Airport Metro Station to reflect the cultural essence of West Bengal.
