Sunday morning turned into a nightmare for commuters in Kolkata as a Blue Line metro rake broke down just before entering the Mahanayak Uttam Kumar (Tollygunge) station. The train came to a sudden halt inside the tunnel, with only a small portion of the first coach reaching the station platform. Within minutes, the electricity was cut off for safety, causing the air conditioning to stop and leaving hundreds of passengers trapped in stifling, pitch-dark coaches.
As the wait grew longer, panic turned into outrage. Passengers tried to communicate with the driver, only to learn that the rake had suffered a major technical failure. Trapped in the heat, many pleaded for the doors to be opened, but their requests were initially ignored due to safety protocols. This led to a near-riot situation inside the coaches, with some angry commuters even threatening to break the glass doors after the emergency exits reportedly failed to function.
Eventually, metro officials decided to evacuate the train as it was impossible to restart the rake in its current position. Passengers were instructed to move toward the front of the train through the interconnecting vestibules and were escorted out via the driver's cabin door onto the platform. The incident led to a total suspension of services between Kavi Subhash and Maidan, though truncated services remained operational between Dakshineswar and Maidan.
