MHA alerts states after demonstrations in J&K, Lucknow amid Iran-US conflict

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a nationwide alert to states, warning of possible violence in the wake of escalating tensions between the United States, Israel and Iran. The advisory follows protests in Jammu and Kashmir, Lucknow, Bhopal and Hyderabad after the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint US-Israel strikes.

In a cautionary communication circulated on February 28, the ministry urged state governments to remain vigilant against potential communal unrest. It warned that developments in West Asia could have “ripple effects” within India and asked authorities to step up monitoring of sensitive areas to prevent any flare-up.

States have also been directed to identify and monitor “pro-Iran radical preachers giving inflammatory sermons” that could incite tensions. The move comes as demonstrations, largely by members of the Shia community, were held in several cities mourning Khamenei’s death and condemning the US and Israel.

In Kashmir, large gatherings were reported in Srinagar, Budgam and Bandipora, with protesters assembling at Lal Chowk and raising slogans. Similar scenes were witnessed in Lucknow near Rumi Gate and Chota Imambada, as well as in Bhopal, Hyderabad, Aligarh, Leh and Kargil. Security forces were deployed in strength, and officials said the protests remained peaceful.

Amid the unfolding crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting and directed officials to ensure the safety of Indian citizens in West Asia. India has called for restraint from all sides, emphasising the need to avoid further escalation while maintaining internal peace and communal harmony.
