A suspect, identified as Jonathan Bulik, has been apprehended for vandalizing a statue of the Virgin Mary at the Resurrection Church in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn.
The miscreant sprayed black paint on the statue and wrote the word "Fake" on it. The incident is being treated as a hate crime, and Bulik has been charged with criminal mischief. He was taken to the hospital for a psychological evaluation.
Witnesses at the scene detained Bulik until the arrival of the police, who discovered him in the process of writing another word on the statue.
The shocking incident has left churchgoers deeply saddened and in disbelief.
The vandalized statue had previously been targeted and was replaced through a fundraising campaign. The incident has drawn attention to the increasing crimes against religious institutions.
