A shocking incident has emerged from Jagatballavpur in Howrah, where the body of a 55-year-old woman was recovered from a sack near the Maju–Marghurali embankment on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Sushma Dere, who had reportedly been missing since Wednesday evening.
According to local residents, the abandoned sack lying near the embankment drew suspicion before the grim discovery was made. When it was opened, the lifeless body of the woman was found inside, sending shockwaves through the area and triggering panic among villagers.
Police have taken the woman’s son and daughter-in-law into custody for questioning as part of the investigation. Locals claimed that tensions and disputes had been ongoing inside the household for some time, raising suspicion about possible domestic conflict.
The incident has also drawn attention because residents alleged that the same sack in which the body was found had previously been used by the son to cover his motorcycle. The claim has further deepened suspicion among villagers, although police have not officially confirmed these details.
Authorities have sent the body for post-mortem examination and launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of death. Police officials said further action will depend on the findings of the post-mortem report and the ongoing inquiry.
