Mitchell Starc retires from T20Is, prioritizes Tests & 2027 ODI world cup

Mitchell Starc, Australia’s fiery left-arm pacer, has announced his retirement from T20 Internationals at the age of 35, choosing to prioritize the demanding Test cricket schedule and the 2027 ODI World Cup. With 65 T20I appearances since his debut in 2012, Starc leaves the format as Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker with 79 scalps, his best figures being 4 for 20 against West Indies in 2022. His final T20I outing came at the 2024 World Cup in the Caribbean, just six months before the next edition in India and Sri Lanka.

Starc’s decision is a strategic move to stay at his peak for Australia’s critical upcoming red-ball and ODI campaigns, marking the end of an era in T20Is where his new-ball swing and lethal yorkers were a hallmark.Starc’s love for Test cricket has always been evident, and his retirement from T20Is underscores his commitment to the longest format. His decision also allows Australia’s selectors to groom younger bowlers for the T20 World Cup, giving the team time to adapt to his absence in the shortest format.Australia’s chair of selectors, George Bailey, acknowledged the challenge of replacing Starc’s unique skill set in T20Is.

However, Bailey remains optimistic about the depth in Australia’s bowling ranks. Players like Nathan Ellis, Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott, and Xavier Bartlett are poised to step up, with Ellis already emerging as a key figure in the T20 setup. Bailey believes that while Starc’s exact role may not be replicated, a reshuffling of responsibilities among the bowlers could fill the void.Starc’s retirement coincides with Australia’s announcement of their T20I squad for a three-match series against New Zealand in October. The squad sees the return of Marcus Stoinis, who has resolved his availability issues with selectors, and Matt Short, back from injury. However, Cameron Green will miss the series to play in the Sheffield Shield, potentially resuming his bowling, while Nathan Ellis will be absent for personal reasons. The team’s strong recent record—winning 14 of 17 T20Is since Starc’s last appearance—suggests they are well-equipped to move forward, even without their star pacer.

Looking ahead, Starc’s focus on Test cricket and the ODI World Cup signals his intent to extend his career in the formats he values most. His record of 79 T20I wickets and a World Cup title will remain a testament to his prowess in the shortest format, but his sights are now set on adding to his 89 Test appearances and 121 ODI wickets. As Australia prepares for a packed 2026-2027 schedule, Starc’s decision reflects a calculated effort to prioritize longevity and success in the formats that define his legacy.
