A roadshow in support of BJP candidate Subrata Mitra in the Baharampur Assembly constituency of Murshidabad was disrupted on Thursday after actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty suddenly fell ill midway through the programme. The incident occurred during a high-energy election procession that had drawn a large crowd along the campaign route.
According to party sources, the roadshow began from Gandhi Colony near the Circuit House in Baharampur and proceeded smoothly until it reached the New Market area, where Mithun Chakraborty reportedly started feeling unwell. He was given immediate first aid and moved to a nearby location for rest as his condition deteriorated during the programme.
Following the incident, the roadshow continued without the actor. BJP candidate Subrata Mitra, along with district president Maloy Mahajan and other party leaders and workers, carried forward the campaign and completed the procession at Khagra Chaurasta crossing in Baharampur. Party insiders said the discomfort was likely caused by heat and exhaustion, after which Mithun Chakraborty left for Kolkata for further rest.
Subrata Mitra is contesting from Baharampur in a high-profile triangular battle against Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury and Trinamool Congress candidate Naru Gopal Mukherjee. Mithun Chakraborty had joined the campaign specifically to boost support for the BJP candidate in the constituency before his sudden illness interrupted the schedule.
