MLA Manoranjan Byapari falls ill during Assembly session, rushed to hospital

Senior Trinamool Congress MLA Manoranjan Byapari collapsed inside the lobby of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Monday morning. The incident took place shortly after he entered the premises. He was reportedly walking alone through the corridor towards his chamber when he suddenly lost balance and fell face-first to the ground. The corridor was nearly empty at the time.

ISF MLA Nawsad Siddique, who was nearby, immediately came to his aid. Siddique attempted to revive Byapari by sprinkling water on his face. When there was no response, BJP MLA and practising doctor Ajay Poddar from Kulti reached the spot and provided initial assistance. Several other legislators, including TMC MLA Rahima Mondal, also helped. The Assembly’s medical unit was informed without delay.

The medical team conducted a preliminary check and found that Byapari’s blood pressure was significantly higher than normal. His blood sugar levels were also elevated. Despite efforts such as hydration and massaging his limbs, Byapari remained unresponsive. Following this, he was urgently shifted to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata for further medical attention.

Eyewitnesses present during the incident stated that Byapari appeared to lose balance and attempted to grab onto something before collapsing. The fall happened suddenly, and he lost consciousness immediately. No external injury was reported at the time of transport to the hospital.

At present, Byapari is undergoing treatment at SSKM Hospital. Doctors are continuously monitoring his condition and are working to stabilise his blood pressure and sugar levels. According to hospital sources, he is conscious but weak, and will need rest. No timeline has been confirmed for his discharge. Byapari, who is in his seventies, represents the Balarampur constituency and has a history of high blood pressure and diabetes.
