Mob attacks Hindu homes in Bangladesh after youth’s death, separate killing reported in Kushtia region

Tension escalated in parts of Bangladesh after mobs targeted Hindu households and businesses in the Rangpur region following the death of a Muslim youth, while a separate violent incident in Kushtia claimed the life of a spiritual leader. Authorities have deployed additional forces to prevent further unrest.

In Rangpur, a mob attacked several Hindu homes and shops in the Daspara market area in the early hours, allegedly after the killing of Rakib Hassan. Police said the violence was carried out by “a third party” attempting to divert attention from the murder. Investigators have identified suspects involved in the vandalism, and officials said those responsible for both the killing and the attacks would be pursued. Family members of the deceased youth stated that the Hindu community had no role in the murder.

In a separate incident in Kushtia, assailants killed school teacher and spiritual figure Shamim Reza Jahangir and injured several followers. Authorities said the attackers also set fire to his religious retreat following allegations of insulting religion. Security personnel, including the Rapid Action Battalion, were deployed to restore order in the area.

The incidents come amid growing concerns about communal violence in Bangladesh. Rights groups, including the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, have reported multiple attacks on minority communities in recent months, highlighting ongoing communal tensions.
