Modi Govt to conduct caste census, announces Ashwini Vaishnaw

In a significant policy move, the Central Government on Wednesday announced that caste-based data will be officially included in the next national census. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs and confirmed by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a press briefing.

The inclusion of caste enumeration is being seen as a pivotal development in India's demographic data collection, with far-reaching implications for policy, social justice, and welfare distribution. This marks the first time in decades that caste will be systematically counted alongside other census parameters, such as religion, language, and economic indicators.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, while addressing the media, highlighted that this decision reflects the government's commitment to evidence-based policymaking. He also accused the Congress and the opposition INDI alliance of previously opposing such initiatives, claiming that their current support for caste census is politically motivated.

“This government believes in transparency and data-driven decisions,” Vaishnaw said, while asserting that previous administrations had avoided implementing such measures despite multiple demands from states and social groups.

The caste census is expected to not only influence political narratives but also reframe discussions around reservations, resource allocation, and social equity. With the 2026 census preparations underway, the new inclusion is expected to require extensive training, updated survey frameworks, and digital adaptations.

The move comes amid growing demands from several states, including Bihar and Maharashtra, for comprehensive caste data to aid in governance and targeted welfare. The decision is likely to spark fresh debate across party lines as political leaders prepare for its socio-political impact.
