Modi in Assam: “From tea to tech, state will soon be known for chips”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday visited a tea garden in Assam’s Dibrugarh, where he interacted with workers and highlighted the state’s legacy as a global tea hub while outlining a vision for its technological future. Calling tea “the soul of Assam,” he praised the contribution of tea garden workers, especially women, and described the interaction as a memorable experience during his visit.

Sharing his experience, the Prime Minister emphasised the role of tea garden families in enhancing Assam’s identity worldwide. He noted that their hard work and perseverance have helped build the state’s reputation in the global tea industry. During the visit, he also engaged with workers on cultural aspects and interacted informally, underlining his connection with the community.

Later, addressing a public rally in Dhemaji ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, Modi said Assam is set to be recognised globally not only for tea but also for semiconductor manufacturing. He stated that the upcoming semiconductor plant will position the state as a hub for modern technology, adding that products such as mobile phones, cars, televisions, and appliances could in the future run on chips produced in Assam.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the state’s development trajectory over the past decade, contrasting it with what he described as a troubled past marked by unrest. He asserted that governance changes have brought stability and growth, while expressing confidence that the current government would secure another term in the elections.

Assembly elections in Assam are scheduled to be held in a single phase on April 9, with counting of votes set for May 4. The Prime Minister is expected to continue addressing multiple rallies across the state as part of the campaign.
