No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday expressed deep shock and sorrow over the demise of veteran politician Mukul Roy, describing him as a long-time associate and “brother-like” colleague. In a message, she said his passing had left her heartbroken and noted that the political fraternity, irrespective of party lines, would feel his absence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed condolences on the veteran leader’s death.
Banerjee recalled Roy’s association with the All India Trinamool Congress since its inception, highlighting his role as one of the party’s key pillars. She said he had devoted himself to strengthening the organisation and was widely accepted across levels of the party. Roy had also served as a Union Minister during his political career.
Over the years, Roy’s political journey saw significant shifts. He left the Trinamool Congress in 2017 to join the Bharatiya Janata Party, before later returning to the Trinamool fold. However, he remained a BJP MLA until his final days. Banerjee noted that despite changes in political paths, his organisational skills and contribution to Bengal politics would not be forgotten.
In his condolence message, Modi said Roy’s political experience and efforts in public life would be remembered and extended sympathies to his family and supporters. Banerjee also urged Roy’s son, Subhrangshu Roy, to stay strong during the difficult time.
