Indian cricket team fast bowler Mohammed Shami and his brother Mohammed Kaif have been summoned by the Election Commission to appear for a hearing under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, which began on December 16 last year. The hearing relates to alleged discrepancies in their voter enumeration forms.
Notices were issued on Monday from Kartju Nagar School in the Jadavpur area of south Kolkata, asking them to appear before the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO). Shami, however, could not attend the scheduled hearing as he is currently representing Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Rajkot.
Shami is registered as a voter in Kolkata Municipal Corporation Ward No. 93, which falls under the Rashbehari Assembly constituency. Though born in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, he has been residing in Kolkata for several years due to his cricketing career and has long been enrolled as a voter in the city.
According to Election Commission officials, the names of Shami and his brother appeared on the SIR hearing list due to complications in their enumeration forms, specifically related to progeny mapping and self-mapping discrepancies. Such hearings are being conducted for individuals where documentation or mapping issues have been flagged during the revision process.
The SIR hearings have been ongoing for over a week, with several prominent individuals already appearing before election officials. Shami’s hearing has now been rescheduled and is expected to take place between January 9 and 11, after he completes his cricketing commitments.
