Monirul Islam says he will fight from Farakka regardless of ticket, claims he was made 'scapegoat' by TMC

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) faces a fresh wave of internal rebellion in Murshidabad after the party dropped outgoing Farakka MLA Monirul Islam from its 2026 candidate list. The party has instead fielded Amirul Islam for the seat, a move that has deeply angered Monirul. Following the announcement on Tuesday, Monirul expressed his resentment, claiming he had been made a "scapegoat" despite his efforts to build the party's foundation in the region. He famously ended the 25-year-long reign of Congress stalwart Mainul Haque in 2021, a feat he reminded the leadership of during his outburst.

Monirul Islam has openly challenged the party's decision, announcing that he will contest the upcoming assembly elections from Farakka regardless of the TMC ticket. While he has not yet revealed whether he will join another political party or run as an independent, he hinted at a major organizational collapse for the TMC in the block. He warned that party officials currently in office would resign en masse in his support, signaling a potential "game" or tactical shift that could hurt the ruling party's prospects in this crucial constituency.

The rebellion in Farakka mirrors a similar situation in North Bengal’s Rajganj, where veteran MLA Khageshwar Roy has also turned rebel. Roy, who was overlooked in favor of athlete Swapna Barman, echoed Monirul’s sentiments of a "conspiracy" and even alleged that financial influence played a role in the ticket distribution. Both leaders have warned that the TMC’s new candidates will face a difficult path to victory due to the marginalization of grassroots workers who have stood by the party for years.
