The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for over 30 districts in Uttar Pradesh, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and lightning strikes until July 9. The alert applies to both western and eastern parts of the state, where widespread monsoon activity has been recorded over the past few days.
According to official forecasts, light to moderate rainfall is expected in parts of western Uttar Pradesh on July 4, while eastern districts may witness intense showers. Several areas have also been flagged for potential lightning during this period. The yellow alert advises residents to remain cautious, especially in lightning-prone regions.
In Purvanchal (eastern Uttar Pradesh), the districts under alert include Jaunpur, Varanasi, Chandauli, Gorakhpur, Sonbhadra, Mau, Ballia, Azamgarh, and Ghazipur. Kushinagar, Maharajganj, and Siddharthnagar have also been listed for expected heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. The rainfall intensity may vary across regions, but the risk of lightning remains present in all listed districts.
In the western region, rainfall is forecast in Agra, Etawah, Auraiya, Jalaun, Mathura, Hathras, Firozabad, Mainpuri, and Etah. These districts are expected to experience scattered to widespread rainfall during this alert period. Local authorities have been advised to monitor the situation closely.
The Awadh region is also likely to receive heavy rain. Alerts have been issued for Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, and Fatehpur. Rainfall is also expected in Kanpur, Raebareli, Sultanpur, and Ambedkar Nagar. Meanwhile, Basti and Sant Kabir Nagar are expected to receive light rain at one or two locations.
The weather department has asked the public to avoid open areas during thunderstorms and remain alert during periods of intense rainfall. Officials are monitoring river levels and low-lying areas as a precautionary measure in districts where high rainfall is expected.
