More than 3.5 crore pilgrims take holy bath during Amrit Snan at Mahakumbh

Over 3.5 crore devotees participated in the first Amrit Snan (holy dip) at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, marking the beginning of the Maha Kumbh Mela. The event, coinciding with the auspicious Makar Sankranti, saw a massive turnout despite cold weather conditions, with dense fog affecting the Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, and Fatehpur districts. The minimum temperature in Prayagraj was recorded at 8°C, with the maximum expected to reach 18°C.

In preparation for the influx of pilgrims and the adverse weather, the Uttar Pradesh government set up various facilities to support the attendees. Free night shelters were established across the city, particularly near the ghats, providing warmth to those who arrived early for the holy dip. Bonfires were arranged at major intersections to offer relief from the chill. The local administration, police, sanitation workers, and volunteers were deployed to manage the crowd, ensure safety, and maintain cleanliness. Authorities also set up medical camps and emergency services to handle any health-related issues that might arise due to the large crowds and cold conditions.

The Naga Sadhus, leading the processions for the Amrit Snan, were seen making their way to the Sangam in groups. Many Naga sadhus, smeared in ash and carrying traditional weapons like spears and tridents, participated in the Shahi Snan, adding to the spiritual significance of the event. Some Naga sadhus rode horses while performing rituals, marking their participation in the sacred occasion. Their disciplined display of rituals, including the energetic playing of the Damru, captivated many devotees and onlookers.

The Uttar Pradesh government had anticipated the arrival of at least 35 crore pilgrims over the duration of the Maha Kumbh, which is expected to run until February 26, 2025. As part of the arrangements, sanitation efforts were prioritized, with cleanliness being maintained along the ghats and other pilgrimage areas. Traffic control measures were also put in place to manage the movement of both pilgrims and vehicles. Authorities coordinated with voluntary organizations and local bodies to ensure the smooth execution of the event, focusing on public health and safety.

This year’s Maha Kumbh holds particular significance due to the rare celestial alignment, which is believed to occur once every 144 years. Seers and religious leaders have emphasized the rarity of the astrological configurations that coincide with this year’s event, adding to its spiritual importance. The Maha Kumbh Mela, held once every 12 years, is one of the largest religious gatherings globally, drawing pilgrims from across the world. The festival will continue for several weeks, with key ritual dates scheduled for additional holy dips.
