More trouble for Mamata, sedition complaint filed over

An FIR has been filed against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station over remarks she made during a public rally held on June 2 at Rani Rashmoni Road. The complaint alleges that her statements related to a murder case in Bangladesh and references to information involving India’s Home Ministry could have implications for national security and diplomatic relations.

The complaint was lodged by advocate Rinki Singh Chattopadhyay. According to the complaint, Banerjee referred to an incident in which two suspects allegedly linked to a murder in Bangladesh entered India through Meghalaya and were later arrested by West Bengal’s Special Task Force. The complainant alleged that these remarks suggested knowledge of sensitive matters involving central authorities.

During the rally, Banerjee stated that the Special Task Force had arrested a major accused from Bangladesh and that protests had taken place in Bangladesh following the arrest. She further said that the accused had entered Bengal through Meghalaya and that she had been advised by the Union Home Minister not to make certain information public because it concerned the country. She also claimed to know who ordered the killing and whose names had emerged in the matter.

According to the complaint, several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and related laws have been cited. The allegations include promoting enmity between groups, provocation with intent to cause unrest, acts allegedly affecting communal harmony, criminal intimidation and intentional acts aimed at disturbing public peace. The complainant has sought an investigation into whether the remarks violated these provisions.

The filing of the FIR follows political controversy surrounding the statements made at the rally. The complaint argues that the remarks could affect India-Bangladesh relations and involve issues of public order. The matter is currently under investigation, and no court has issued any ruling regarding the allegations contained in the complaint.
