MP Prasun Banerjee calls for action on Ganga pollution in Parliament following Taaza TV's campaign

Taaza TV has brought significant attention to the ongoing issue of pollution in the Ganga River, highlighting the critical need for stronger measures under the Namami Ganga project, a government initiative aimed at cleaning and revitalizing the river. The project, which focuses on sewage treatment, solid waste management, and riverfront development, has been under scrutiny for its limited success in reducing pollution levels. Prasun Banerjee Member of Parliament from Howrah, emphasized the importance of greater involvement from state governments, stating that the success of the project hinges on better coordination between central and state authorities. He suggested that clear accountability must be established for states to ensure effective implementation of the project’s goals.

Banerjee also underlined the need for more robust enforcement of environmental regulations to curb pollution. He specifically called for the imposition of fines on industries responsible for dumping toxic and untreated waste into the Ganga. In addition, he proposed introducing penalties for individuals or groups who dispose of non-degradable waste into the river. To support these efforts, Banerjee advocated for widespread public awareness campaigns aimed at educating citizens about the importance of proper waste disposal and the role each individual plays in protecting the river’s health.

The MP further highlighted the environmental damage caused by certain cultural and social activities, such as wedding ceremonies held on boats in the Ganga, where fireworks are used, contributing to river pollution. Bandhopadhyay referred to the Pollution Control Board's regulations on fireworks, which are typically banned during festivals like Diwali and Shab-e-Barat due to air pollution, and questioned why similar restrictions are not applied to these events. He called for a review of such activities and proposed stricter enforcement of environmental norms during such celebrations. Banerjee committed to raising the issue in Parliament, pushing for stronger regulations and measures to reduce pollution and protect the Ganga from further environmental degradation.
