The North Kolkata unit of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has descended into chaos following a bitter clash in a WhatsApp group between MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay and local councilors. The conflict erupted on Sunday morning when Councilor Subrata Mukherjee of Ward No. 10 openly criticized the veteran MP and district president for his perceived inaction regarding party workers rendered homeless by post-poll violence. Mukherjee accused Bandyopadhyay of staying safely indoors while grassroots workers suffered, even sarcastically referring to him as the "undisclosed emperor of North Kolkata" and suggesting it was time for him to step down.
The situation took a turn for the worse when Sudip Bandyopadhyay responded to the criticism with a derogatory remark. Replying to a supporter in the group, the MP used a provocative proverb, implying that while "elephants roam the market, dogs bark by the thousands." This indirect comparison of a party councilor to a dog has ignited a firestorm within the district unit. Councilor Mukherjee hit back immediately, stating that if the MP considers his councilors' dogs, he must remember he is the "chairman of the dogs."
This digital spat is merely the tip of the iceberg, as a significant section of North Kolkata councilors has voiced growing frustration with both Sudip and newly elected MLA Nayna Bandyopadhyay. Party workers allege that senior leaders have either switched off their phones or ignored calls during crises. There are also unverified rumors circulating among disgruntled workers that the MP might be heading to Delhi to explore ties with the BJP, though no official confirmation has been provided.
