Mukunda Das's legacy revived at Anandamoyee Kalibari in Siliguri, a symbol of freedom struggle

Anandamoyee Kalibari, located in Siliguri, North Bengal, is a temple steeped in historical significance linked to India's struggle for independence. Established in the early 20th century, the temple is intimately connected to the legacy of Mukunda Das, a revered folk poet and revolutionary figure. Das played a crucial role in the Swadeshi movement, using his poetry to mobilize the masses against British colonial rule. His songs and plays served as tools for political activism, inspiring people to join the fight for freedom and promoting nationalistic fervor among the youth.

In May 1924, Mukunda Das moved from Barisal to Siliguri, where he encountered the dilapidated structure that would later become Anandamoyee Kalibari. Recognizing the need for restoration, he resolved to raise funds through musical performances. Over several months, Das conducted various events, ultimately raising 501 rupees, which he dedicated to the temple's refurbishment. His determination to revitalize the temple was rooted in his belief that it could serve as a rallying point for revolutionaries and a center for cultural activities.

The temple's significance grew in 1926 when it became home to a Kali idol brought from Kashi. Mukunda Das took charge of organizing the temple's activities, transforming it into a vibrant spiritual hub. He named the temple "Anandamoyee Kalibari," signifying a place of joy dedicated to the goddess Kali. Under his stewardship, the temple hosted various cultural programs, fostering a sense of community among the local populace and encouraging engagement in the freedom struggle.

During festivals, Anandamoyee Kalibari became a gathering place for revolutionaries from different regions of India. The temple grounds served as a venue for physical training, meetings, and strategizing sessions, where revolutionaries discussed plans to liberate the nation from British rule.
