A six-floor building in Surat where several textile workers and their families stayed on rent collapsed on Saturday afternoon. Fire officials rushed to the spot and started working to remove debris and rescue those trapped. Officials said a woman has been rescued, but it is unclear how many are still trapped.
Police sources said the incident took place around 3 pm at DN Nagar society in Paligam. The building, officials said, was in a dilapidated state. Choryasi MLA Sandeep Desai, Surat police commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut, district collector Dr Sourabh Pardhi, and municipal corporation staffers were at the spot.
Fire department officials headed by Chief Fire Officer Basant Pareek oversaw the operation. JCB machines were put to work to remove the rubble, while large slabs were broken using drilling machines.
