Multiple graves desecrated in Bihar's Bhagalpur, heads stolen from bodies over 5 years

A disturbing series of grave desecrations has unfolded in Bhagalpur, Bihar, as the heads of multiple corpses have been stolen from graves in the Fazilpur-Sakram Panchayat area. The incidents, occurring over the past few years, have sparked fear and alarm among the local residents, leading to increased demands for action from the authorities. The cemetery in the north fields of Ashrafnagar village under the Sanhola block has been identified as the site where these grave violations are taking place.

The latest case emerged when a woman’s body, buried six months ago in the cemetery, was found with its head severed. Villagers noticed signs of a disturbed grave on January 19, 2025, and upon further inspection, it was discovered that the head of the deceased had been removed. The woman, identified as Badrujamma’s mother, was laid to rest in August 2024. This marks the fifth such incident to occur in the area, with the heads of several bodies previously stolen from graves.

Over the past five years, a number of similar incidents have been reported in the area. Notably, the heads of Bibi Akima (mother of Mukhtar’s wife), Ashik Ali’s wife, and several others have been severed and taken from their graves. Residents have expressed shock at the recurring nature of these incidents, which have occurred primarily in the month of January. The local police station in Sanhola confirmed that a case had been registered and an investigation is ongoing.

Local villagers have reported that the graves are being carefully dug up and that the heads of the deceased are being removed with precision. After the theft, the graves are reportedly covered with a bamboo mat and topped with soil, making the tampering less noticeable. The cemetery's boundary wall, which has been repeatedly broken, suggests deliberate actions to gain access to the graves. Residents of the surrounding villages also use this cemetery, which increases the possibility of outsiders being involved in these acts.

Upon discovering the latest desecration, the deceased woman’s family immediately notified the police. Assistant Police Chief Rajveer Sahu dispatched Sub-Inspector Aryan Kumar to the scene for initial investigation. Bhagalpur’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Hridaykant, instructed the SDPO of Kahalgaon to oversee the inquiry. The investigation team has conducted a preliminary inspection of the cemetery, and interviews are being conducted with local residents to gather more information on the incidents.

Local police are working on identifying those responsible for these grave violations. However, no significant leads or arrests have been made thus far. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover the perpetrators and prevent further desecrations. The police are focused on gathering evidence, including examining any possible connections to organized criminal groups or individuals with specific motives for such acts.

The repeated desecrations of graves in this area have raised concerns about the security of cemeteries, with locals calling for better protection and stricter enforcement of laws to prevent similar incidents. The police are under pressure to resolve the case and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. As of now, the investigation continues, and law enforcement is working to uncover the full extent of the crimes.
