Court sends Councilor Mahesh Sharma to 6-day police custody in extortion case
A gruesome murder-suicide shocked the Tetultala area of Garia in South Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon. Rupbani Das, a 50-year-old makeup artist who had been working at a local beauty parlour for over 15 years, was brutally hacked to death inside her workplace. Shortly after the attack, the assailant, identified as her alleged lover, took his own life on the premises.
The tragedy unfolded just minutes after Rupbani’s husband, Anup Kumar Das, dropped her off at the parlour on his motorcycle around 12:05 PM. According to witnesses, a man entered the shop soon after and engaged in a heated verbal spat with Rupbani. The argument escalated quickly, ending in a violent assault. By the time locals and the police could intervene, both individuals were found dead inside the parlour.
Rupbani’s husband was reportedly on his way back home when he received the devastating news and immediately rushed back to the spot. Local sources suggest that while the motive is still under investigation, a long-standing personal dispute between the victim and the attacker is suspected to be the trigger. The police have cordoned off the area and are currently reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing staff members to reconstruct the sequence of events.
