The situation in Jangipur and Murshidabad is gradually stabilizing following recent episodes of communal unrest, according to Additional Director General (ADG) Law and Order, Jawed Shamim. Speaking to the media, he confirmed that intensive police picketing and route marches have been deployed in sensitive zones to ensure the safety of citizens and prevent any resurgence of violence.
The law enforcement agencies are now focusing on both maintaining peace and identifying those responsible for inciting the violence. "We are determined to take strict action against everyone involved, whether they took part directly or played a role in instigating the unrest," said Shamim. Over 200 arrests have been made so far in connection with the violence.
A significant factor contributing to the unrest, according to the ADG, is the spread of misinformation from sources outside the state. He said that fake news has been deliberately circulated to provoke emotions and create division. “Even though the ground situation is returning to normal, false narratives are still being pushed to keep tensions alive,” he warned.
To tackle this issue, internet services have been temporarily suspended in certain affected pockets. This move, officials say, is aimed at curbing the spread of fake news and maintaining control. “We urge citizens not to believe or share unverified messages. Our appeal is for peace and cooperation,” Shamim emphasized.
Security has been bolstered by the combined efforts of both state and central forces. Authorities are closely monitoring social media, messaging platforms, and other communication channels to trace the origins of malicious content and take necessary legal steps against those responsible.
