No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A primary school teacher in Murshidabad district was arrested after allegedly firing at a group of children who were playing in a field near his house, injuring one of them. The incident occurred in Raghunathganj when a ball accidentally entered the teacher’s residence, triggering the violent reaction.
According to local and police sources, the accused has been identified as Samirkumar Mondal, a teacher at Omorpur Primary School. Children from the neighbourhood regularly play in the adjacent field, and residents said there had been previous arguments after balls landed inside his house. On Friday evening, the situation reportedly escalated when the ball struck his door.
Allegedly enraged, Mondal came out with a bird-hunting gun and fired several rounds toward the children. As they fled in fear, one child was struck in the hand by a pellet. He was rescued and taken to Jangipur Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. The injured child’s father alleged that four to five rounds were fired.
Police reached the spot after receiving information, detained the teacher from his residence and seized the weapon. He was later formally arrested. Preliminary indications suggest the firearm may be a modern air gun. The accused has claimed that he fired only to scare the children and did not intend to injure anyone. The matter is under investigation at Raghunathganj police station.
