As Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in the assembly, Samajwadi Party MP ST Hasan voiced opposition, citing conflict with Quranic principles. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) also expressed criticism, raising concerns over the legislation's impact on religious laws. Hasan asserted that adherence to the Quran's teachings is paramount and warned against abiding by the UCC if it contradicts Islamic directives.
The introduction of the UCC bill in Uttarakhand has sparked controversy, with religious and political figures voicing differing perspectives. Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali, an executive member of AIMPLB, highlighted potential exemptions for certain communities under the UCC, raising questions about the proposed uniformity in legal standards. Despite promises made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2022 Uttarakhand assembly elections, the bill faces opposition from various quarters, including the Congress party, which criticized the manner in which it is being presented. Former Uttarakhand CM and Congress leader Harish Rawat accused the state government of bypassing proper legislative procedures and urged for a more inclusive and deliberative approach to discussing the UCC.
