In a significant move to streamline the public distribution system, authorities in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district have removed the names of over 50,000 'silent' ration cardholders. The beneficiaries’ names were deleted during a massive verification drive as they had not used their cards for six months or more. The campaign aims to ensure that food grains and other essential commodities are only reaching genuine beneficiaries.

According to an official statement, the extensive drive resulted in the deletion of 50,323 names from a total of 1,64,237 inactive ration cardholders. While the names of 1,13,338 cardholders are still undergoing verification, a small number of 576 were found to be eligible and will continue to receive their benefits. The process is a targeted effort to clean up the existing beneficiary list.

The verification drive was initiated on the direct orders of Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi. He stated that the primary objective of the campaign is to ensure that only the "bonafide beneficiaries" receive food grains, thereby eliminating fraud and misuse of the system. The DC has instructed block-level officials to act with speed and dispose of all pending cases efficiently.

The drive uncovered several specific reasons for the removal of names. It was found that 20,067 names were removed from both urban and rural areas of the district because their Aadhaar card numbers were deemed "suspicious." Additionally, the names of 2,274 single-member cardholders who were either under 18 or over 100 years of age were also deleted, while the verification of a further 13,332 such cases is still underway.

Official data revealed that the issue of silent cardholders is most prevalent in urban areas. The Jamshedpur urban area recorded the highest number of inactive ration cards, with a staggering total of 68,565. The Jamshedpur-cum-Golmuri area followed closely behind, with 46,703 inactive cards, highlighting the scale of the challenge in the city’s dense population centers.
