The National Commission for Women (NCW) has summoned police officers in connection with alleged harassment of two women whose family members were killed during communal violence in the Shamsherganj area of Murshidabad district. The violence took place during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act and resulted in the deaths of Hargobind Das and his son Chandan Das. Acting on a letter from the widows addressed to NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, the Commission has directed the concerned police officers to appear in person on May 9, 2025, at 11 AM.
In the letter, the women alleged that while they were temporarily sheltering in Kolkata, a team of male police officers forcibly entered their premises without a legal warrant or the presence of any female officers. According to the complaint, the police personnel broke down the door, damaged property inside the shelter, and attempted to detain the women by force. The women also claimed they are facing ongoing threats and intimidation instead of receiving protection or justice following the deaths of their family members during the unrest in Shamsherganj.
The NCW, in an official statement, acknowledged receipt of the letter and stated that it represents not just a complaint but “a desperate cry for justice” from two women who have lost their husband and son. The Commission emphasized that the matter is being taken seriously and has initiated formal proceedings by summoning the police officials named in the complaint for an in-person appearance. The deaths of Hargobind and Chandan Das occurred during protests related to opposition against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, which saw incidents of communal tension and violence in the region.
