Nearly 100 Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi trains to get major upgrades in seating, toilets and interiors

Indian Railways has initiated a nationwide upgrade programme for its Shatabdi Express and Jan Shatabdi Express trains, aiming to significantly enhance passenger comfort, cleanliness and onboard facilities. The Railway Board has directed all zonal railways to conduct detailed inspections of train rakes and prepare strict, time-bound action plans to address deficiencies and improve overall travel experience.

The revamp will cover nearly 100 train services, including around 25 pairs of Shatabdi Express and more than two dozen Jan Shatabdi Express trains. The initiative focuses on modernising key passenger-facing features such as seating, toilets, interiors and digital systems, as part of a broader effort to upgrade flagship train services connecting major cities.

Upgrades to seating will include new upholstery, functional snack tables, mobile charging points, footrests, armrests and other improved passenger amenities. Toilets will undergo comprehensive modernisation with better fittings, upgraded drainage systems, improved washbasins, flushing systems and enhanced hygiene standards. Railways have also planned improvements in doors, locks and overall maintenance of passenger facilities.

To improve ride quality, measures will be taken to reduce jerks in coaches, along with upgrades to vestibules and gangways. Interiors will be refreshed with improved flooring, wall panels and LED lighting. In addition, digital passenger information systems will be strengthened, clearer destination display boards will be installed, and CCTV surveillance will be enhanced to improve safety and communication.

The Railway Board has instructed zonal authorities to carry out detailed audits, identify gaps and implement corrective measures under close monitoring. The revamp is expected to deliver a noticeable improvement in comfort and reliability for lakhs of passengers, while aligning these services with newer trains and evolving expectations of modern rail travel.
