In an unusual display of anger, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud admonished a lawyer during a Supreme Court session on Wednesday. The heated exchange revolved around the listing of a petition, with the CJI expressing displeasure at the lawyer's tone.
Expressing his displeasure, the CJI said, 'One second, lower your voice. You are arguing before the first court of the Supreme Court; Lower your voice or I will have you thrown out of the court.'Please lower your voice first. If you think you can scare us by raising your voice then you are wrong. This has not happened in 23 years. This will not happen even in the last year of my career.
Even before, Chandrachud has reprimanded the lawyers. The lawyer was shocked by the stern warning from the Chief Justice. He immediately apologized. Then he proceeded in a more polite manner. Today's incident is not the first time that Justice Chandrachud has asked to maintain the decorum of the courtroom.
On another occasion, the Chief Justice had expressed strong objection to a lawyer talking on a mobile phone inside his courtroom. Justice Chandrachud had said, 'Is this a market that you are talking on the phone? Confiscate their mobile phones.
In March last year, a senior advocate named Vikas Singh had shouted at Justice Chandrachud. He was appealing to Supreme Court lawyers to pursue a case related to land. Then the Chief Justice said angrily, 'Shut up. Leave this court right now. You can't scare us!'
