The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority expects to complete the reconstruction of the new Chetla Lock Gate bridge by the end of April. Work began in the middle of last year and so far almost 65% of the construction has been completed.
The official said that compared to the earlier steel structure, the new lock bridge will be a linked girder bridge about 22 m long and 10 m wide. It is being reconstructed at a cost of Rs 5.8 crore.
The upper substructure of the bridge has been built as the authorities will now build a footbridge to complete the bridge and open it to vehicular traffic. The official said the work was affected for several months last year due to some existing foundation and utility shifting work that had to be done along with the dredging of Tolly's Nullah.
The old medallion bridge was demolished after an assessment by the Bridge Advisory Committee, which conducted a survey in 2019 and said it was beyond long-term repair due to severe corrosion. It was closed for several months but reopened after repairs and heavy vehicles were barred on it.
