New COVID-19 wave in Asia? Cases spike in Hong Kong and Singapore

COVID-19 cases are sharply rising in Hong Kong and Singapore as a fresh wave of infections spreads across Asia. Health authorities have reported significant increases in both mild and severe cases, with hospitalizations and virus detection indicators reaching new highs in recent months.

In Hong Kong, the percentage of respiratory samples testing positive for COVID-19 has reached the highest level in a year. Severe cases, including deaths, rose to 31 in the week ending May 3. Officials also reported an increased viral load in sewage water and a higher number of COVID-related hospitalizations and medical consultations, indicating active transmission. “The virus' activity in Hong Kong is now quite high,” said Albert Au, head of the Communicable Disease Branch at the Center for Health Protection.

Singapore has also reported a significant rise in COVID-19 cases, with the number of infections estimated at 14,200 in the week ending May 3—a 28% increase from the previous week. Daily hospital admissions rose by about 30% during the same period. The country has resumed providing updates only in response to notable increases. Singapore’s health ministry stated there is no indication that current variants are more transmissible or severe than those seen during the pandemic but acknowledged the role of waning population immunity.

In mainland China, the COVID-19 test positivity rate more than doubled among patients seeking diagnoses at hospitals over the five weeks ending May 4. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention data suggests the country may soon reach a COVID-19 wave comparable to last summer's peak. Health officials are monitoring the situation as more patients test positive across different regions.

Thailand has also reported rising COVID-19 cases following the annual Songkran festival in April, which drew large crowds. According to the Department of Disease Control, the country experienced two distinct cluster outbreaks this year. Authorities across the region have reminded the public, especially high-risk individuals, to stay updated with their COVID-19 vaccinations, including recommended booster doses.
