A 19-year-old man, Bhaskar Behera, was arrested near Tank No. 3 in Action Area 3 of New Town on Saturday night in connection with a bicycle theft racket. Behera, a resident of Kochpukur, attempted to flee when spotted by law enforcement officials during a patrol but was apprehended.
The investigation revealed that Behera was part of a gang targeting upscale residential complexes in New Town. Over the past few months, multiple complaints had been filed about expensive bicycles being stolen from parking areas in these complexes. Following his arrest, police recovered eight bicycles with an estimated market value of ₹1 lakh.
According to the findings, the gang operated late at night, identifying unattended bicycles parked in residential blocks. Behera allegedly monitored the area to ensure no interference before stealing the bicycles. The gang’s activities primarily focused on premium bicycles parked in less-secure areas.
Behera has been presented in court, and police are conducting further investigations to identify other members of the gang and their roles in the thefts. Residents in the area have been urged to enhance security measures for their vehicles and report any suspicious activity to prevent future incidents.
