An Air India flight bound for Newark, USA, made a precautionary air-return to Mumbai on Wednesday due to a suspected technical issue. The aircraft, operating as AI191, landed safely back at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, where it was immediately taken for technical inspection.
According to the airline, the decision to return was taken as a safety measure after the crew detected a possible malfunction shortly after takeoff. All passengers were safe, and the aircraft was grounded for checks by engineering teams.
Following the incident, both AI191 and its corresponding return flight AI144 (Newark to Mumbai) were cancelled. Air India confirmed that affected passengers in Mumbai were accommodated in hotels and rebooked on alternate flights.
The airline stated that passengers of AI144 were also informed about the cancellation and are being assisted with alternative travel arrangements. Air India reiterated that the safety and wellbeing of passengers and crew remain its highest priority.
