Newborn of woman, who is critical due to toxic saline, dies

A newborn died at Medinipur Medical College Hospital on January 15, after being treated with suspected toxic saline. The child was born to Rekha Sahu, who underwent a cesarean section on January 8. Following the surgery, Sahu's condition gradually improved after three days in the High Dependency Unit (HDU), but her newborn son, who had been on a ventilator since birth, continued to struggle. Despite efforts to stabilize him over seven days, the infant passed away on Thursday morning in the hospital's maternity department.

The family of the deceased child has raised concerns about the saline administered during the cesarean section, claiming it led to a rapid deterioration in Rekha Sahu’s health. The family further alleges that they were required to source saline from outside the hospital due to complications, which they believe contributed to the newborn’s death. Although the family has pointed to the saline as the cause, authorities have indicated that the exact cause of death will be determined through further investigation, including a postmortem examination.

The West Bengal CID initiated an investigation into the incident shortly after the death of the newborn. The family, however, has expressed dissatisfaction with the CID’s involvement, stating that they lack confidence in its ability to conduct a thorough investigation. As a result, the family is calling for the case to be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), seeking a more impartial and detailed inquiry into the matter.

The hospital has not officially commented on the specific allegations made by the family. Authorities are expected to continue the investigation, which will include analyzing medical records, the saline used during the procedure, and any other factors that may have contributed to the tragic outcome. The investigation remains ongoing, and no official conclusions have been reached regarding the cause of death or whether the saline played a role in the infant’s demise.
